Rabat – The activities of Aminatou Haidar match a political agenda set outside Morocco, Foreign Minister, Taib Fassi Fihri, said.
“We already know that the job she has been doing does not fall under the positive and noble umbrella of human rights, but it was a part of a political agenda set outside Morocco,” Fassi Fihri said in an interview with “France 24″ TV channel, on the occasion of holding the 8th meeting of the Morocco-EU Association Council in Brussels.
The minister said that Haidar put herself voluntarily in this situation to draw attention, underlining that she offended the feelings of all Moroccans by renouncing her nationality and handing over her passport.
The passport is not a toy to play with and we do not insult one of the symbols of this nationality, he said, adding that this passport gave her free access to Morocco.
Fassi Fihri recalled that all Moroccan political parties are unanimous on not giving in to blackmail, wondering about the timing chosen by Haidar and her sponsors to act this way.
“The question asked is why has she chosen this moment, while we have been busy discussing a new round of negotiations within the framework of the United Nations, to turn up with Spanish journalists and announce, for the first time, that she is not Moroccan?”
This woman gave up her nationality and must take responsibility for this. She is free to go wherever she wants, and since she is a polisario member, she can join her partners who besiege people in the Algerian territory where there is neither census, nor access for people, the minister said.
Fassi Fihri noted that Haidar used and took advantage of the Moroccan nationality for decades, recalling that she was a civil servant at the Equity and Reconciliation Commission from which she benefited.
She presented herself to the Commission, in her capacity of a Moroccan, and received a compensation of 48,000 euros, he recalled.
She is held responsible for this situation and she went back from where she came, to the Canary Islands, in accordance with the law and the regulations of transport international organizations, he added

I think it’s important for our politicians, particularly our government, to realise that if we Moroccans have voiced our unanimous support for His Majesty’s proposed resolution to the problem of the Moroccan Sahara, we do not unanimously appreciate the manner in which Aminatou Haidar’s case has been handled whilst she was still on Moroccan soil. Conventional wisdom would suggest that this Algeria-sponsored provocative agent would be better served by being allowed to stay in Morocco whilst denied any privileges normally afforded to Moroccan citizens such as the right to a passport, or free hospitalisation and schooling for her and her dependents, so long as she continued to renounce her Moroccan identity.
Alternatively she could have been granted an audience with His Majesty, who no doubt would have successfully impressed upon her the importance of being loyal to her beloved country, Morocco, and the benefits she stood to gain from self-rule under Moroccan sovereignty as opposed to the pain and suffering she’s now brought upon herself.
I sincerely hope that she’ll come to her senses before it’s too late, and that our government will find the courage to allow her back, because at the end of the day she’s one of us – whether she likes it or not – and we owe her a duty of care, particularly now that she no longer has control of her mental faculties.
