Morocco Post\ Lisbon, Portugal
Portuguese police (Guarda Nacional Reublicana) reported on Friday 05 February 2010 that they have found a cache containing explosive arsenal which belongs to the Spanish separatist network ETA.
500 kilograms of explosives were found inside a garage in a rural house in Obidos , 100 kilometres north of Lisbon, were likely to be used to target Spanish infrastructure .
The discovery followed an investigation by the Portuguese police after a van was abandoned while suspect fled the police. The incident was a clue in the course of criminal investigation to find out a house with an arsenal ready to use against targets which might be Spanish.
Jose Almeida Rodriguez, head of Portugal’s judicial police(Policia Judiciaria ) said at a news conference at the country’s anti-terrorism centre in Lisbon that “What we can say at this point, is that we found in a house a cache of elements which seem to fit with a terrorist network,”.
In the house, located in Avarela, about 100 kilometres north of Lisbon, Portuguese police also found “some maps of Spain” and a small van containing construction material, fake license plates and two detonators.
This operation is related to an incident that happened on 1 February when the police detected a van with a fake plates which was followed by a landlady reporting to the police that her tenants disappeared from the house (went missing).
This incident coincides with the arrest of two Eta members in Portugal few weeks ago, but so far, there is no evidence of connection between the two incidents
