Morocco Post Washington DC \ Backed by Algeria’s regime the Polisario’s intransigence is costing North Africa its unity, progress, and prosperity, said .the US paper Richmond Times- Dispatch
In its article titled “U.S. Must Lead North African Settlement”, the US newspaper wrote that the absence of a settlement to the Sahara conflict and the repeated threats by the Polisario to return to insurgency and acts of violence has “dire consequences for the future stability and security of the region.”
The American daily newspaper reaffirm that the “Religious extremism, terrorism, and intolerance will always threaten the interests of the people of North Africa and of their partners in the G8 countries as long as this conflict is not resolved
As sign of good will, Morocco introduced in 2007 an autonomy plan initiative seen by the international community as “the best alternative to the Polisario self-determination claim and a way out of the deadlocked U.N.-sponsored negotiations,” said the Richmond Times- Dispatch .
Morocco’s proposal offers the population of Western Sahara the autonomy and the right to govern themselves, said the Virginian newspaper adding that “by doing so, the plan guarantees autonomy for the Sahara region provinces and preserves the territorial sovereignty of Morocco.”
The Richmond Times- Dispatch also noted that the former administration and the U.S. Congress considered the Moroccan proposal as a “credible and serious breakthrough” hoping that the UN, Algeria and the Polisario will consider it as a basis for a peaceful solution to the conflict.
The author of the article made clear that the Algeria-Polisario’s plan of referendum is no longer possible under the present circumstances.
